Community Outreach

社會工作

Yarrow’s Outreach Program ensures that low-income Chinese seniors can access the healthcare, housing, and income supports they need to live with dignity and confidence.

We assist Chinese seniors in overcoming language and cultural barriers to ensure they receive fair treatment and essential services. Through medical support, personalized assistance, and educational workshops in their own language, we empower seniors to make informed health decisions and advocate for themselves. Our outreach efforts also build lasting relationships, enhancing trust, fairness, and inclusion in the community.

Our Offerings:

Health-Related Workshops

reoccuring

We invite healthcare professionals to provide health-related workshops to inform and empower seniors. We also host medical advocacy workshops, creating a safe space for seniors to learn, express, discuss, and share experiences in order to support the autonomy of seniors in managing their own health and navigating the healthcare system.

Casework

by appointment

We provide one-on-one assistance to seniors, assisting them in navigating the complex social system and supporting them in fulfilling their health, income, and housing needs. Our work is grounded in community building - we build trusting relationships through listening and understanding seniors’ unique concerns and experiences. Part of our work includes assisting seniors in completing government forms, applying for benefits, translating important documents and letters, assisting seniors in accessing essential resources, and empowering seniors when challenges arise.

Medical Accompaniment

by appointment

We support seniors in accessing equitable healthcare through addressing language and cultural barriers in the medical system. We help request professional interpreter services provided by Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) for medical appointments and recruit volunteer interpreters when needed, ensuring that communication is accurate in medical settings to support seniors’ healthcare decisions. This program emphasizes the importance of accompaniment, medical advocacy, and empowerment.

Having someone to come with me to my medical appointments had such a big relief. They treat me with such kindness it makes me feel less scared to face the medical system here.
