Yarrow’s Seniors Programs support low-income Chinese elders to live healthy, connected, and fulfilling lives. Through culturally familiar and language-accessible activities, seniors stay active, learn digital skills, and find community in welcoming spaces. The programs help reduce social isolation, improve overall well-being, and build confidence among elders who often face language, cultural, and financial barriers.

Our Offerings:

Seniors Core Meetings, Cultural Events, and Workshops
once a month
Held across accessible locations in Chinatown, Downtown Eastside, and Strathcona, our monthly events create consistent opportunities for seniors to connect, learn, and lead.
We host a rotating community event that centers the voices, culture, and well-being of low-income Chinese seniors. These events include Seniors Core Meetings where seniors discuss issues that matter to them—such as housing, health care, and safety—building grassroots leadership and advocacy. We also organize cultural celebrations around the Lunar New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and other holidays to foster joy, pride, and intergenerational connection. In addition, hands-on workshops on safety, mental wellness, and digital literacy offer practical tools tailored to seniors' lived realities.

Tech Class
weekly
Our structured smartphone and tablet learning program, takes place at the Sun Wah Centre. The Beginner Class introduces foundational phone skills—from navigating the phone screen and making calls, to accessing the internet and email. The Intermediate Class builds confidence in using practical tools like app stores, calendar, camera, maps, translation, AI, and more. Each class is taught in Cantonese and Mandarin with slow, clear instruction tailored to the seniors, reducing frustration and boosting confidence.

Tech Corner
every monday
Seniors come to get one-on-one help with their phones, tablets, laptops, and common apps like WeChat. This drop-in program empowers Chinese-speaking elders with essential digital skills, bridging the generational and technological divide. It started in response to rising digital barriers during the pandemic and continues to support digital inclusion.

Morning Exercise
twice a week
Found in Chinatown Plaza, Morning Exercise offers gentle, accessible wellness routines based on traditional Chinese health practices. With guided breathing, movement, and self-massage techniques, it helps the seniors improve circulation, mobility, and mental well-being.
The program provides not only physical benefits but also a consistent social space that combats isolation in the senior immigrant community.
